Audio Interview: Filmmaker Domino Martinez on Writing, Acting and Directing in Southern California
How does growing up in Southern California, enduring trauma, surviving cancer, attending community college — and taking a communications studies course with yours truly — as well as earning a bachelor’s degree in art history all inform the work of an up-and-coming auteur who wrote the script for a short film she’s acting in and directing?
Well, you can find out thanks to this exclusive Waywards interview with Domino Martinez, an artist and former student from several years back who’s based here in SoCal’s Inland Empire. Domino and I spoke yesterday, April 26, about her short film-in-progress, Saint Arcadia. As suggested above, she wrote the script; Domino directs and stars in the movie as well.
We discussed the forthcoming film, her myriad creative pursuits and various sources of inspiration outside Back to the Grind, an independent coffeehouse here in Riverside, so sorry (not sorry) for the diegetic traffic sounds! I don’t think they distract or detract all that much from the recorded interview, which you can access via the embedded audio below. Feel free to find out more about the film on Facebook and Twitter too!
